What makes Canvas a better option than other materials?
Choosing canvas for covers, such as tonneaus and awnings, is usually done for reasons of affordability and durability. There is also a wide variety of patterns and designs available in canvas.
Canvas lasts longer than most other fabrics and, after many years of service, canvas can be replaced relatively easily. Look after your canvas and it will last for 20 years or more.
Compared to PVC products, canvas doesn’t get as hot, stuffy and smelly. Unlike vinyl, canvas breathes, which is why it has long been the material of choice for making tents.
Is Canvas waterproof?
High thread-count canvas is more than adequate for providing shelter in most rain events. Canvas is technically not completely waterproof. Untreated canvas, especially, can become saturated with water. Waterproofing treatments are used to prevent against this.
What does 'seasoning' canvas mean?
When you first get your canvas, put it in place for its intended use, spray with water and allow it to dry completely. The water will cause the canvas to shrink slightly, closing the needle holes in the stitching. Don’t forget to allow your canvas to dry thoroughly afterward. Y
our canvas is now ‘seasoned’ and more waterproofed, as a result. More serious waterproofing can be done with purpose-built waterproofing products.
What care is needed to look after canvas?
A soft brush will help keep your canvas clean, along with an occasional hosing with clear, cold water. It’s best to remove any bird droppings, vegetable matter, food stains and dirt as soon as possible. Your canvas is best to be free of materials that would cause mould and mildew.
Mould is the number one enemy for materials that are damp for too long. After it comes into contact with water, make sure your canvas is allowed to dry well. Don't store your canvas unless it is thoroughly dry.
If you notice any mildew spots, brush them off asap. White King bleach can be used to deal with mildew. Test on a small inconspicuous section of your canvas first. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and use 1 part White King, 3 parts water.
Generally, you shouldn’t use soaps, detergents, cleaning fluids and insecticides on your canvas. Petrol, oil, kerosene and other solvents should be kept away too.
Canvas that is cleaned extensively may require reproofing
